OBJECTIF: L'objectif de cet article vise à identifier les déterminants du tabagisme, analyser et comparer leurs effets sur le comportement tabagique des étudiants et du personnel de l'Université Senghor d'Alexandrie. METHODES : Etude transversale descriptive et analytique portant sur 151 personnes (étudiants et personnel) de l'Université Senghor d'Alexandrie en 2012. Des modèles de régression logistique ont permis de tester l'association entre le comportement tabagique et les variables sociodémographiques, socioéconomiques et la connaissance du tabagisme. RESULTATS : La prévalence globale du tabagisme au sein de l'USA était de 10% avec une prévalence de 3% chez les étudiants et 32% chez le personnel administratif. Les facteurs fortement associés au comportement tabagique de la population étudiée sont l'âge, le statut socioprofessionnel, le niveau d'étude et l'exposition au tabagisme passif. Dans l'association des quatre co-variables « âge », « statut professionnel », « niveau d'étude » et « exposition au tabagisme passif », c'est le statut professionnel qui est le déterminant majeur dans le choix de fumer (chi2 = 24,16 ; ddl = 3 ; Prob < 0,00001). CONCLUSION : Le tabagisme au sein de l'Université Senghor d'Alexandrie est surtout le fait du personnel administratif masculin. Le respect de la loi antitabac semble suivre un gradient selon le statut socioprofessionnel. La lutte contre le tabagisme à l'Université devrait principalement être dirigée vers le personnel administratif masculin de niveau non universitaire.
